Abstract

ABSTRACT

Campus life in Indonesia is a miniature laboratory of the nation's diversity in ethnicity, race, and intergroup relations (SARA). This diversity should serve as a source of synergy and enrich academic perspectives. However, in reality, interactions between groups are often colored by attitudes (which are tendencies to react) and prejudices (negative judgments not based on facts). Prejudice can damage the academic climate, divide solidarity, and hinder the achievement of national educational goals. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the challenges of prejudice in the campus environment and formulate strategies for managing it.

Campus life in Indonesia is often characterized by ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. This diversity has the potential to generate social dynamics, including the formation of social attitudes and prejudices among students. This study aims to analyze the manifestations of social attitudes and prejudice on campus as well as their impact on student interactions. Using a qualitative approach, a case study was conducted on the interactions of students from different backgrounds. The results show that although general interactions tend to be open, there is still grouping based on identity and place of origin rooted in certain prejudices.

If left unmanaged, these prejudices can lead to negative impacts, including social segregation (grouping based on ethnicity or region of origin) and potential conflict. Intensive and positive social interactions between groups have been proven to reduce the level of prejudice.
