Abstract

Trauma recovery in children is a complex and multidimensional process, requiring holistic and integrated interventions, beyond the role of the family alone. This study examines the role of the family as a key factor in children’s trauma recovery, from a diagnostic pastoral counseling perspective, while recognizing the importance of broader social and community support. The importance of a safe and supportive family environment is emphasized in facilitating the processing of traumatic experiences, building resilience, and developing adaptive coping mechanisms in children. However, successful recovery also depends on a strong social support network, including the community and relevant institutions. A diagnostic pastoral counseling approach, which integrates spiritual and psychological aspects, is examined as a framework that can strengthen family support and facilitate the healing process, with community support able to enrich and expand this intervention. The study also identifies challenges that families and communities may face, such as a lack of understanding of trauma and complex social dynamics, and proposes strategies to increase the capacity of families and communities to support children’s recovery. In conclusion, effective collaboration between families, communities, and mental health professionals, informed by a diagnostic pastoral counseling framework, is essential to achieving optimal recovery outcomes in children who have experienced trauma.
